Recently, there has been an increase in the number of important works in which the existing and/or well-known frankings from the early period of philately, the so-called ‘classic’ philatelic period, are recorded and listed. Today, the computer makes it easier than ever to put such projects into practice, even though years and sometimes decades of research are required to compile such works. For collectors and dealers alike, these sometimes even multi-volume books are valuable sources from which they can obtain countless details about the rarity or frequency of certain franking combinations.
Ray Simpson and Karl Louis jointly embarked on this project for British mixed frankings of the Victorian era, and in the process a large-format 273-page book was created, containing an infinite amount of individual information, mostly in tabular form.
The starting point for this impressive work was the card index (not digitized!) built up over decades by Karl Louis, the well-known Great Britain expert and BPP examiner. Up to 100,000 (!) items of British philately are listed and meticulously traceable in it with brief information. From this, both authors developed a concept of processing that is of interest to postal historians as well as to traditional country collectors. In 16 individual chapters they deal with all the issues and individual stamps, even the postal stationery items that have appeared in Great Britain since 1840, and for each stamp they show possible mixed franking combinations, their destinations and estimates of rarity, amounting altogether over 1,200 covers! Indirectly, the postal history of the British postal system is also made very clear, because these stamps changed colours and appearance over the decades of Queen Victoria’s reign, thus clearly reflecting the progress in the postal system.
The last additional chapter (17) introduces the approach to the valuation of this material; the individual valuations are given in the table. Collectors and dealers should pay special attention to this chapter. The authors have come up with an unusual system for the valuations that have been made, which came about after a long discussion, also with other experts. The rating figures are based on the Stanley Gibbons rating for a normal franking, which can be found in the SG specialised catalogue. For a mixed franking, the valuation of the most valuable stamp on the cover was taken as a basis and a multiplier was added to it, so that the reader is given a valuation that is based on the same catalogue. This also makes it clear how rare a mixed franking is compared to the normal single franking on a cover.
Countless letters and covers of all kinds – there are probably over 400 – are not only listed and assessed in detail, but also illustrated in colour, with the sources of the originals being mentioned. The wealth of knowledge and information is truly staggering and in this form it is unique. The book is a tribute to the magic of classic philately in Great Britain, a tribute that is well deserved.

Récemment, on a constaté une augmentation du nombre d’ouvrages importantes dans lesquelles les affranchissements existants et/ou connus des débuts de la philatélie, la période philatélique dite “classique”, sont compilés et répertoriés. Aujourd’hui, l’ordinateur facilite plus que jamais la mise en pratique de tels projets, même si des années et parfois des décennies de recherche sont nécessaires pour compiler ces travaux. Pour les collectionneurs et les négociants, ces ouvrages, parfois même en plusieurs volumes, sont des sources précieuses qui leur permettent d’obtenir d’innombrables détails sur la rareté ou la fréquence de certaines combinaisons d’affranchissement.
Ray Simpson et Karl Louis se sont lancés conjointement dans ce projet pour les affranchissements mixtes britanniques de l’époque victorienne, et ont ainsi créé un ouvrage grand format de 273 pages, contenant une quantité infinie d’informations, la plupart du temps sous forme de tableaux.
Le point de départ de ce travail impressionnant a été le fichier (non numérisé !) constitué au fil des décennies par Karl Louis, le célèbre expert de la Grande-Bretagne et examinateur du BPP. Près de 100 000 (!) pièces de la philatélie britannique y sont répertoriées et méticuleusement retracées avec une courte description. A partir de là, les deux auteurs ont développé une manière de travailler qui intéresse aussi bien les amateurs d’histoire postale que les collectionneurs de philatélie traditionnelle. En 16 chapitres, ils traitent de toutes les émissions et de chaque timbre y compris les entiers postaux apparus en Grande-Bretagne depuis 1840. Pour chaque timbre, ils indiquent les différentes combinaisons d’affranchissement mixtes, les destinations possibles et les estimations de la rareté, soit au total plus de 1 200 documents ! Indirectement, l’histoire postale du système britannique est également très claire, car ces timbres ont changé de couleur et d’apparence au cours des décennies du règne de la reine Victoria, reflétant ainsi clairement les progrès du système postal.
Le dernier chapitre supplémentaire (17) présente l’approche de l’évaluation de ce type de matériel ; les évaluations individuelles sont indiquées dans le tableau. Les collectionneurs et les négociants doivent accorder une attention particulière à ce chapitre. Les auteurs ont mis au point un système inhabituel pour les évaluations qui ont été faites, qui est le fruit d’une longue discussion, également avec d’autres experts. Les montants des évaluations sont basés sur la notation de Stanley Gibbons pour un affranchissement normal, qui se trouve dans le catalogue SG spécialisé. Pour un affranchissement mixte, l’évaluation du timbre le plus précieux sur le document a été prise comme base et un multiplicateur y a été ajouté, de sorte que le lecteur dispose d’une évaluation qui se fonde sur le même catalogue. Cela montre aussi clairement à quel point un affranchissement mixte est rare par rapport à l’affranchissement simple normal sur une lettre.
D’innombrables lettres et documents de toutes sortes – il y en a probablement plus de 400 – sont non seulement répertoriés et évalués en détail, mais aussi illustrés en couleur, les sources des pièces originales étant mentionnées. La richesse des connaissances et des informations est vraiment stupéfiante et, sous cette forme, elle est unique. Ce livre est un hommage à la magie de la philatélie classique en Grande-Bretagne, un hommage bien mérité.
