We are delighted to announce another significant publication by our esteemed members and prolific philatelic researchers, Dr Eduardo Barreiros and Dr Luiz Barreiros, who are both Fellows of the Royal Philatelic Society, London. Just a few months after our last update on the work of these authors, their latest book has been published: ‘Portugal na Guerra Civil de Espanha — 1936-1939 : Os ‘Viriatos’ : História Postal’ (Portugal in the Spanish Civil War: 1936–1939 : The ‘Viriatos’: Postal History).
The Spanish Civil War has been extensively documented in terms of its political, military, and socio-economic aspects. However, Portugal’s involvement in the conflict alongside Franco’s forces, which included around 20,000 legionnaires known as the ‘Viriatos’, has received little attention from postal historians.
Although most of this rare correspondence is held in Portugal and has attracted the interest of some collectors, a systematic study of this postal history has yet to be undertaken. After spending more than twenty years gathering a significant collection of letters and postcards, the authors have now published this essential work to fill this gap.
