A post on Frajola’s Board for Philatelists informs us that the winner of the Crawford medal for 2026 is the book ‘New York City Foreign Mail 1845 – 1878’ (2 Volumes) by Nick M. Kirke. It won with 39 points vs. 35 points for the runners-up.
The book was published by the Collector’s Club of New York in 2024. What does it contain? In the words of the author:
- My book highlights the historical, geographical, and philatelic facets that made this mail special worldwide.
- The book explores my doubts about some previous “New York City Foreign Mail” parameters.
- In a new chronological classification listing, I expand the number of NYCFM cancels from 201 to 315.
- I display the most comprehensive group of NYCFM cancels on cover seen together in one place at one time.
- My book shows a large variety of destinations in about 70 foreign countries and postal administrations with a plethora of exciting routes and ratings.
- The book shows over 4,700 images in full color, including over 900 covers.
- Throughout the book anecdotes lighten the load of philatelic text.
An online presentation by the author can be seen on the CCNY’s Vimeo page.
