(Zurich/pcp) To round off the auction year 2024, the long-established Swiss auction house Corinphila offered a truly exceptional range of high-quality, top-class philately in auctions 333 to 346. On 22 November and from 25 to 30 November 2020, the eyes of numerous collectors from all over the world were once again on Zurich. The great demand for rare stamps and covers was demonstrated by the fact that more than 1,500 buyers from 78 different countries were able to successfully place their bids, actively contributing to the auction’s resounding success. The numerous impressive increases and various top hammer prices speak for themselves.

Rarities from Switzerland to Overseas

For many years Corinphila has always offered an extraordinary range of valuable individual items and collections in national and international collecting areas. This year’s autumn auction impressively continued this tradition and presented the finest in philately in a total of 14 catalogues, ranging from Switzerland and Europe to exotic overseas territories, including Australia, Brazil and Africa. The voluminous main catalogue ‘All the World’ alone had a highlight or two in store for (almost) everyone. The various speciality catalogues managed to surpass this in their respective areas with a multitude of valuable specialities, rare stamps, unique covers and much more.

The unique ‘Sawaya’ collection (part 1), which presented rare covers and postal history rarities from the foreign post offices in the Levant, was also in high demand. The rare pieces were in high demand and saw numerous hammer prices at the top of the scale. Great Britain also offered fantastic increases with an outstanding classical part that included various collections. Among them was the collection of Simon Veresford-Wylie (part 2), which included a first day cover from 6 May 1840, as well as rare proofs and other specialities.

The Australian collecting area also made a big impression with the sale of an ‘Inverted Swan’, which achieved one of the top hammer prices (CHF 73,800 incl. premium). Equally remarkable is a letter from Old Italy, more precisely from the state of Parma in 1860, which sold for CHF 67,650 (incl. premium), to name just two specific examples.

Generally speaking, there is strong demand for rare and valuable items in almost all collecting fields. Unused issues from the classical period in particular continue to be very popular. The same applies to rare covers from all collecting fields, although here too, quality and aesthetics in combination with rarity are currently considered key factors and have a significant influence on price development. In many cases, the Corinphila range sets the standard here. In addition, provenance is another aspect that is given high priority by Corinphila. All this is reflected in the high-quality auction and special catalogues, which impress across the board with their attractive presentation and detailed information on the items offered. It is no wonder that these are often considered reference works as soon as they are published.
