Exclusive rarities and gems as far as the eye can see
“We’ve saved the best for last”, one might say in view of the highlights on offer at the 10th auction of the ERIVAN Collection. Many of the letter rarities on offer at the final auction have not been available on the market for decades. From local issues and private postal services to the Confederate States and United States to Fancy Cancels and Hawaii, the offering impresses with iconic pieces and a variety of other outstanding individual lots.
One of the highlights is the 1846 Millbury Postmaster Provisional (lot 3 – hammer price: 60,000 USD). The 5c stamp with the image of George Washington and a neatly cancelled red PAID stamp as well as a “5” postmark and Milbury postmark on a folded letter to Boston is being offered at auction for the first time in over forty years.
The so-called missionary issues from Hawaii have always been among the icons of classic philately and are as sought-after as they are rare. Lovers will be delighted by the offer of one of the most beautiful covers with one of the rare stamps (lot 35 – hammer price: USD 120,000). This stamp has already adorned the collections of Théodore Champion, Alfred F. Lichtenstein and Alfred J. Ostheimer. The single franking of a 13c blue “H.I. & U.S. Postage” on a letter from Honolulu to San Francisco is a real feast for the eyes and comes from a well-known correspondence of the sister of the first postmaster of Hawaii.
A top-class transatlantic letter and a rarity of the first rank is offered in lot 101 (USD 200,000). We are talking about a Wells, Fargo & Co. Pony Express cover to Switzerland, one of only six known Pony Express covers to other countries and yet one of the most beautiful examples.
And these are just three selected examples of the impressive offerings in the final auction of the ERIVAN collection. Experts agree that this auction will be the crowning glory of a unique auction series with an unrivalled success story. The philatelic life’s work of Erivan Haub will endure in many collections and the provenance “ex ERIVAN” will be recognised worldwide as a special distinction and seal of quality.
