(p*c/pcp) In 2017, a book by Wolfgang Maassen was published that uncovered the countless legends and myths surrounding the most famous stamp collector of all time: ‘The Mysterious Philipp von Ferrari. Philatelist, Philanthropist and Cosmopolitan’ (special edition 12 of the series “Chronik der deutschen Philatelie”). The 500-page work was also available in a 100-page shorter book version in English/French. Both language versions were sold out within a few weeks and were not reissued.

Less well known – because it has hardly ever been shown in public – was and is the author’s own collection on this topic, which was shown only once in 2017 in German as an exhibit in 18 frames at the International Stamp Exchange in Sindelfingen and will be shown for the last time in English at NORDIA 2025 from 12–14 September in Malmö. This exhibit is documented in the book series ‘PHILA HISTORICA. Special Edition No. 6’ in a way that is both worth seeing and reading, and it provides a deep insight into the Ferrari family, their life in Italy and France, with a particular focus on Philipp and his parents, but later also his friends and friendships, his life in France and Austria, and ultimately also in Switzerland. While the first part of the exhibit (book) mainly works with digital images and copies, the second part focuses on philatelic material from and about Pierre Mahé, Ferrari’s curator. This is because Mahé was in contact with countless dealers of the time, always looking for new material for Ferrari. Even a handful of envelopes to Ferrari himself can be seen in this exhibit. Not many more are known.

This book offers an excellent and exciting insight into the life of this ‘stamp king’, the most famous collector of all time. The book has been available in German since March 2025 and will also be available in English from the end of August 2025.
