(wm-pcp) On 15 March 2025, the well-known Austrian philatelist Horst Horin (* 30 October 1940) passed away after a long illness. He was a well-known figure in Austrian philately, having served as treasurer on the board of the Association of Austrian Philatelists for many years.

Particularly noteworthy is his involvement in all international exhibitions held in Austria since 1990, such as WIEN ‘90 and WIPA ’08, where he contributed his expertise in many areas of organisation. Of particular note in recent years are the annual exhibitions in Gmunden, for which Horst Horin was jointly responsible.

He served as commissioner for the association at numerous international exhibitions, most recently at the World Exhibition in Lugano in 2022. He also distinguished himself as an exhibitor and juror and was a FIP juror for traditional philately and postal history for many years. His last assignment in this role took him to the IBRA in Essen in May 2023.

He always attached great importance to maintaining good relations with collectors in neighbouring philatelic associations, including the Bund Deutscher Philatelisten (Association of German Philatelists), by supporting, among other things, the idea of multilateral links and joint exhibitions. His involvement in the planning and implementation of the joint German-Austrian Philatelists’ Day in Bad Reichenhall in 2006 is also worth mentioning.

As a collector, he specialised in field and military mail (with his exhibit ‘Field and Military Mail under the Double Eagle in the German Confederation 1815–1866’ he even won a gold medal at HAFNIA 2024!). He was a long-standing member of the board of the WIPA’s supporting association and most recently served as its president. He was also a member of the ‘phila’-Toscana association and numerous other associations. German philately will not forget its friend.
