(wm-pcp) On the 100th birthday of the Lörrach doctor and philatelist, issue 17 of the CPh’s series on the history of philately in Germany has been published. The 76-page booklet is different in several respects from certain commemorative publications that appear on the occasion of a notable person’s milestone birthday. Although it contains an extensive 20-page biography of the jubilarian, written by Wolfgang Maassen, which also focuses on less well-known facts, the focus is on a study by Dr Jaeger himself, which deals with the history of surcharged stamps, the development of which Jaeger illustrates with countless philatelic examples – stamps and covers etc. – from his collections. He traces the charity stamps from 1897 onwards, as well as surcharge stamps and souvenir sheets that were intended for other purposes – right up to more recent times. It reads well and fluently, is entertaining and highly interesting and one can only marvel at the activity of this now centenarian, who is able to bring the history of philately to the reader in such a well-founded way.
A few copies of this brochure (only 100 copies were printed) are still available from the office of the Bund Deutscher Philatelisten e.V., Am Hofgarten 4, 53113 Bonn, Tel. 02 28/308 58-0, e-mail: info@bdph.de at a price of 14 euros (incl. postage for Germany).
