Originally, Meiners intended to divide this extensive collection into three auctions. However, the experienced auctioneer quickly realised that it was actually a kind of ‘textbook of classical philately’ that could serve as a guide for other potential buyers on how to collect Bavarian Kreuzer stamps. This is an easy assessment to agree with when you take a closer look at the 245-page special catalogue and its treasures. Meiners is clearly passionate about this exceptional collector, and his enthusiasm is infectious when he talks about the true meaning of the words ‘amator’ (lover) and ‘connoisseur’. Building up such a collection requires decades of intensive study and engagement with the subject matter. Meiners says, “Rarely have we auctioned a collection that was as homogeneous from start to finish as the Bavarian collection presented here by Dr Christoph Priebe. To create something like this, decades of enthusiasm are a prerequisite…’.
Meiners advised and supported Dr Christoph Priebe for many years, including selling a ‘huge’ Hamburg collection privately to a wealthy Hamburg resident on his behalf. A few years ago, Priebe’s Brunswick collection was returned to the philatelic market through one of Dr. Derichs’ auctions. Now, Priebe is parting with his favourite philatelic treasure: the Bavaria collection. According to Meiners, the reason for this is that Priebe is moving to southern Europe and does not want to take the collection with him due to the climate. However, Priebe will remain involved in philately, collecting classic issues from the Iberian Peninsula and associated colonial stamps.
