02.09.2016 - USPS: packages up, first-class mail down

(usps) Good news as well as bad news for the United States Postal Service (USPS). In the second quarter of 2016, the volume of packages delivered by the postal service grew by 13.6 percent. But on the other hand the USPS’s most profitable mail segment, first-class mail, dropped 3.4 percent.
The second quarter of 2016 showed a loss of US$ 552 million; in the same quarter of 2015, the loss was Us$ 197 million. The USPS gave the following comment: ‘Although the Postal Service achieved strong results in package delivery and standard mail volumes, only a slight increase in total revenue’ (from US$ 16.6 billion to US$ 17.7 billion, ed.) ‘was reported due to a mandated price reduction earlier this year.’
