In the Netherlands, a special kind of fever has erupted. Whenever there is a long period of heavy frost in that country, the hearts of long-distance skaters are beginning to beat faster. Because then there will be a chance that the world famous Elfstedentocht can be organised. The ‘tocht’ (tour), which traditionally is to be held in the northern province of Friesland, is an ice skating tour over natural ice; the track is about two hundred kilometers long. Philatelists also spring to attention when the Elfstedentocht is to be held: will PostNL (the Dutch postal authorities) once again issue a special Elfstedentocht stamp? The last time the tour was organised, in 1997, this certainly happened. So at the moment, Dutch philatelists are holding their breath - unless they are skating...
