It´s not often that a foreigner has the honour to receive an award from the Dutch foundation that publishes Holland’s largest stamp magazine, ‘Filatelie’. But on 12 November of this year, such an honour befell Wolfgang Maassen, Editor in Chief of the official German stamp magazine ‘philatelie’. In the Dutch town of Soestduinen, the ‘Stichting Nederlandsch Maandblad voor Philatelie’ awarded him with the prestigious Leon de Raay Medal, for Maassen’s contribution ‘Belangrijke Roemeense verzamelingen’ (Important Romanian Collections) that was published in 2011 in ‘Filatelie’.

Wolfgang Maassen, a noted author of numerous outstanding articles, books and other publications, received the award from the hands of Cees van Balen Blanken, chairman of the Foundation. Each year, the Leon de Raay Medal goes to the author of the best scientific contribution that was published in ‘Filatelie’ in the previous year. Traditionally, the award is handed over during the Autumn Meeting of the Foundation.
