Thanks to a successful mix of international philatelic dealers from home and abroad, the presence of many post offices and the impressive booth of the German postal administration, Deutsche Post, the 21st edition of the International Stamp Fair in Essen (Germany) has become a great success. Even the new UNPA-chief Dave Faylor, who had travelled from New York to be present in Essen, showed himself very impressed with the almost ceaseless streams of visitors that lined up every day to visit the fair.

One of the many inspiring events was the opening act from the German Ministry of Finance: the presentation of the new German stamp issue ‘Europa 2011’ (‘Forests’). All day long, the aisles of the exhibition hall were full of people, not only interested in what was displayed but also ready to shop, thanks to wide and interesting range of merchandise. Unlike last year, when the London 2010 exhibition took place at the same time as the International Stamp Fair in Essen, the halls were overflowing with visitors, buyers and traders. The main German philatelic associations, like BDPh, APHV, BPP and BDB, presented themselves united under one roof: that of the so-called Philatelic Center.

The German stamp dealers’ association APHV offered its members a relaxing evening on 6 May, at a reception where food and drinks were readily available; many accepted this opportunity gratefully. The same was the case with the special offers that were available during fair, which found plenty of buyers.

A special word of admiration has to be spoken with regard to the spotless and fluent organisation of the event, which was lead by the impeccable Jan Billion. No sign of the slightest chaos, no unnceccary waiting or queues of people, but collegial help, wherever necessary. It was a different and unusual experience, especially for an international event like this. The investments made in the small but very experienced staff surely paid themselves out.

During the show one saw only happy and satisfied faces of customers and traders. And you can count on it that, when professional philatelists say they are satisfied, it means that they are really very satisfied indeed. One of the participants, Clarissa Führsinn of the UNPA, stated: ‘We will be back,’. In this way, she expressed the feeling of many people and organisations that were present in Essen. So beware, because the next edition will be held a bit earlier than usual: on 12, 13 and 14 April 2012. Those interested can always find the latest news www.briefmarkenmesse-Essen.de!
