The 16th International Stamp Fair in Essen (4 – 6 May 2006) celebrates a special anniversary this year. In 2006, it will take place for the 30st time! The world’s oldest trade fair of this stature presents a programme that is unparalleled nationally and internationally.

Over 180 (!) specialist dealers, auction houses, philatelic accessory producers, publishing houses and postal authorities will be present at Essen Fair. For the numerous regular visitors of the fair it is important to know that 20 percent of the exhibitors have not for a long time or even never been present at the 16th International Stamp Fair in Essen.

But there are also several exhibitors from Belgium, Austria, Sweden or the United States. Approx. 70 foreign postal administrations lend an international flair to the anniversary event. Nearly all important European countries and numerous overseas countries will be there! Some of them – like Qatar on the Persian Gulf – have never before been sighted in our latitudes.

With an exhibition area of 420 square metres, the German Post Office is the largest exhibitor. On opening day, it will present three new commemorative stamps and a miniature sheet featuring the Football World Championship. Postal stationery issued at Essen Fair celebrates the football event with a Championship value stamp and a football commemorative cancel. Other commemorative cancels feature Gerd Bucerius’ 100th birthday – a commemorative stamp will follow on 4 May - , the AIJP World Congress in Essen, the 50th anniversary of the German Association of Young Philatelists (DPhJ) and the special exhibition “60th Anniversary of the Numerals Series”.

The European Championship for Thematic Philately premières at Essen Fair! 69 stamp collectors from 18 nations will fight for the first Thematic Champion title. With their special exhibition “60th Anniversary of the Numerals Series”, more than a dozen members of the study group “Allied Control Council 1946-1948” will present an overview of postage stamps and postal history of the first Allied Occupation issues in Germany after WW II.
