04.06.2018 - Wolfgang Maassen honoured with the Anton Abele Medal

(wm) On 19 May, during NABA 2018 in Lugano, the President of the Swiss Philatelic Association Hans Schwarz (he is also editor-in-chief of the Schweizer Briefmarken-Zeitung) grabbed the opportunity to honour his former colleague Wolfgang Maassen (who worked 28 years as Editor of the German stamp magazine "philatelie" ) for his lifelong literature and other activities.
Schwarz referred to Maassen's more than 80 own publications; another 30 or more as publisher or co-writer and the several thousand individual articles that he published in countless journals in Germany and abroad. Maassen has also made a name for himself in Swiss philately, most recently with a what could be his magnum opus: the biography of Philipp von Ferrari. Maassen still acts as the editor of the APHV magazine, the Philatelic Journalist and his own digital journal PHILA HISTORICA.
Wolfgang Maassen thankfully accepted the award (it concerned the Anton Abele Medal), but also pointed out that in recent years in the world of Swiss philately numerous excellent manuals, handbooks and other research-based works saw the light. These works, he said, deserved a comparable outstanding tribute. All the more he appreciated the honour he had received as a ‘foreigner’ in Lugano.
